Would the Denver Broncos consider signing recently released WR Michael Crabtree considering his history with the team?

The Denver Broncos made a trade for Joe Flacco, and now they need to get him another veteran weapon at the wide receiver position.

The idea of adding speedy John Brown was pretty well squashed due to the fact that he carries the sickle cell trait, but what about Flacco’s other top receiver in Baltimore last year?

Dare I say recently released Michael Crabtree could be a fit for the Broncos this year?

That’s right, Mr. “Two Chains” himself could find his way onto Denver’s radar if only everyone involved could let bygones be bygones.

The Broncos would need to consult with one of their own star players, cornerback Chris Harris Jr., to see if these two could enjoy an amicable working relationship, but Crabtree is pretty much exactly what the Broncos need.

Carrying a dead cap hit of $4.66 million with the Ravens this year, Crabtree would probably not break the bank on a free agent contract, was still averaging over 11 yards per catch with the Ravens last year, and would likely come with very few strings attached.

He doesn’t have the explosive speed of a guy like John Brown, but Crabtree has been fairly consistent throughout his career. He had 54 receptions for 604 yards and three touchdowns last year for the Ravens but had a stretch of three seasons in a row before that with at least eight touchdowns.

Crabtree doesn’t have any history with new Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, but he probably knows Vic Fangio pretty well. They were together in San Francisco for four seasons (2011-14) and went to the Super Bowl.

They were a Crabtree touchdown catch away from beating Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens in that game, but a pass interference that wasn’t called prevented Crabtree from making the grab.

The Broncos would also not be penalized in terms of the compensatory pick formula for 2020 if they were to sign a guy like Crabtree, who was a cap casualty of the Ravens.
