Backup Edge

Ironically, the Broncos have two highly qualified players heading off to free agency for a ‘backup edge’ role with this team.

Shaquil Barrett has been playing at a high level in that role for four years now, but he rightly wants a chance to start somewhere in the league. He deserves that chance and he will get it from another team.

Shane Ray hasn’t been productive for a couple of years because of a wrist injury and the complicated recovery process, but he will probably be considered for a rotational spot wherever he winds up signing.

Probably the most logical pairing here is with Bears backup edge Aaron Lynch, who has been playing for Vic Fangio and Brandon Staley for a few years now.

The 6-foot-6, 270-pound Lynch has been a productive edge throughout his career and could be exactly what the Broncos are looking for here.

The Broncos also have Jeff Holland to play this role going forward and could look at a number of players in the 2019 NFL Draft.
