5. Safety

Let me start off by saying that the Broncos actually have some really good players at the safety position, but there’s a decent chance they will be able to upgrade in the 2019 offseason, especially looking at the available free agents.

Justin Simmons should be entrenched in one of the starting safety spots for the Broncos, but Darian Stewart’s spot should very much be considered ‘up for grabs’. Stewart really struggled in 2018 and the Broncos couldn’t get consistent play on the back end.

Behind Darian Stewart on the depth chart is Will Parks, who played over 50 percent of the defensive snaps this year for the Broncos. Parks is a pretty good player for Denver and in all honesty should have gotten more playing time than Stewart, who was the third-most utilized player in Denver’s defense in 2018 behind Simmons and cornerback Bradley Roby.

The Broncos simply gave up too many big plays on the back end of the secondary and weren’t good enough in run support. Denver needs someone who can do a little bit of everything and there are players who fit that qualification (Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, Tyrann Mathieu, LaMarcus Joyner, Adrian Amos, etc.) set for unrestricted free agency.

I fully expect the Broncos to go after a safety this year to pair with Justin Simmons with Will Parks maintaining his role as the top nickel/dime back.
