Latest on Mike Munchak
In somewhat of a shocking development, the Broncos’ top two head coaching finalists could end up with the team.
John Elway was looking for a head coaching candidate with experience and expertise on one side of the ball or the other, and he decided to hire Bears defensive boss Vic Fangio.
The guy Fangio presumably beat out as a finalist was Mike Munchak, the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2014.
Munchak — a Hall of Fame lineman himself — has been coaching up young linemen in the NFL since the late 90s aside from a brief and unsuccessful stint as head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
As far as offensive line coaching in the NFL goes, no one does it better than Munchak.
It didn’t seem likely the Broncos would be able to interview Munchak for their head coaching position and then offer him a position below that on their staff with any chance of it working out, but it sounds like that is exactly what is happening.
According to a variety of reports, Munchak is closing in on finalizing a deal to move from Pittsburgh to Denver to coach the Broncos’ offensive linemen. Make no mistake about it — this would be a massive move for Denver.
Munchak could potentially serve an assistant head coach role as well and perhaps oversee the offensive side of the ball, but at the very least, having him in place to coach the offensive line upgrades every player on the roster in that position group.
