The Latest Zac Taylor rumors

According to Mike Klis, the Broncos will be interviewing Los Angeles Rams QB coach Zac Taylor on Thursday in California.

Taylor is obviously a former player who has been rising quickly through the coaching ranks after his playing career didn’t take off.

That’s not unlike the journey of his boss, Sean McVay.

McVay was a college wide receiver who immediately became an assistant wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after his playing days (2008).

But even the great Sean McVay spent three years as an offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins before he became head coach of the LA Rams. Zac Taylor’s process should not be expedited just because he was a coordinator for a brief stint in Miami when the team fired Bill Lazor.

In my opinion, Taylor should be considered a prime offensive coordinator candidate, and the Broncos need someone like him who has been around McVay’s innovation on that side of the ball.

The problem? Other teams are also in hot pursuit. If some team is willing to give Taylor a head coaching gig, would he take the Broncos’ OC job instead? I am not so sure.

There’s a potential connection to be made here of the Broncos bringing in Taylor and a player he is very familiar with in Ryan Tannehill. The Dolphins are not expected to keep Tannehill and the former first-rounder out of Texas A&M has worked with Taylor for a combined total of seven years between their time in Miami with the Dolphins and at Texas A&M.

If the Broncos do choose to hire Taylor as their head coach, they will undoubtedly need an experienced defensive coordinator and offensive assistant.
