Learn from the past

If there’s one thing that can be learned from all of this, it’s that sometimes the ‘no brainer’ decisions are just the right ones.

There’s no need to overthink things.

If there’s an overwhelming ‘no brainer’ decision out there, and the Broncos have the chance to pursue it over some of the other teams who may be needing a new head coach (Cleveland, Green Bay, etc.), they should do it.

Unfortunately, the last time the Broncos were in contention for a new head coach, they had a chance at one of the best young offensive minds in the league. Who knows what a guru like Shanahan might have done with Paxton Lynch?

Hindsight is always 20-20, but because of how obvious the decision to hire Shanahan should have been Broncos fans are upset with Elway and the rest of management for essentially wasting two years with their great defense.

As frustrating as the defense has been at times for not being the exact same as the 2015 crew (spoiled, aren’t we?), Joe Woods has done a pretty good job with the talent the Broncos have and perhaps a more experienced coordinator could come in and get them back to the level they should be at.

The reality is, the Broncos are just a step behind in their scheming, in-game adjustments, and instincts during games. The decision not to go for a 4th-and-1 against the Cleveland Browns is one of the most obvious indicators that this coaching staff has more confidence in tendencies than actual in-game feel and flow.

The Broncos need a head coach who is equal parts crazy and smart. They need someone who understands where the game is heading five years from now, and to be able to get ahead of the curve.

They need someone who, like Kyle Shanahan just did to Denver, can identify matchups on tape and exploit them to death. It doesn’t feel like the Broncos have had that tactical advantage in two years.

Joseph clearly understands the game well, but he has not done well from a tactical standpoint, even though the Broncos have not been all bad since he joined the organization.
