Broncos vs. Chiefs: Tale of two quarters at Arrowhead
By Tylor Walden
The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs have played a tale of two quarters. Denver started off well, but Kansas City has begun to pick it up.
An interesting stat from the game so far between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs involves the running game. Denver is 3-0 when they run the ball 25 or more times in a game. They are winless at 0-4 when they do not.
Denver is returning to what has worked and it has so far kept this game well within the Broncos favor. With Royce Freeman out with an ankle injury, Phillip Lindsay gets his first start as a Bronco. And he has looked solid so far. He recorded the first score of the game on a one yard touchdown run.
Devontae Booker has spelled Lindsay and in his few runs has looked good too. Denver looked as dominate as they did against the Cardinals. But then, the second quarter started and it has not been pretty.
Something that has been noticed is that when things get bad, it tends to roll on and turn from bad to worse. And that happened when Brandon McManus missed a field goal for the first time all season. It was a 55-yard attempt. Seeing as it was a long field goal, it is understandable.
It was important for the Broncos defense to hold on. But after Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce combined to score a touchdown, things just continued to snowball.
Two huge sacks by the Chiefs defense allowed them to get the football back. It was looking good for the Chiefs until the Broncos scored a touchdown as the first half came to a close.
If the Broncos are going to get back into this game, they need to get back to what they did in the first quarter. Run the ball well and put pressure on Patrick Mahomes. I have noticed that Denver has not pressured him a lot in the second quarter.
The Kansas City Chiefs will get the ball to start the second half. Hopefully, the Denver Broncos can get it together.
