Patrick Peterson, Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are bad. Really bad. This might be the only way they consider ridding themselves of star corner Patrick Peterson despite the three years remaining on his contract.

At the age of 28, he still has a few good years left in the tank, and unfortunately for the Cardinals, I just don’t think Super Bowl contention is in the realm of possibility in the next three seasons. This team went downhill quick.

Peterson has been to seven Pro Bowls, named First-Team All-Pro three times, and he has been considered one of the top cornerbacks in the game since entering the NFL as the fifth overall draft pick out of LSU in 2011.

So far this season, he doesn’t appear to be losing any steps. Through two games, he is the eighth-ranked corner according to Pro Football Focus posting a 79.5 rating. This would be the best mark on the Denver Broncos currently.

The Cardinals, however, appear to be in rebuild mode, and Peterson has quite a cap hit (~15M in 2018) which is more of a reason for Arizona to send him packing and truly begin this rebuild. It’s also what could be the big snag for John Elway.

In addition to valuable capital (either players or picks), the Broncos would need to create some financial flexibility to take on this cap hit.

Although unlikely, it would certainly help the No Fly Zone return and ensure the defense remains in top condition for the remainder of the season.

Whether or not John Elway makes a trade to improve the secondary remains to be seen, but the fact of the matter is, this isn’t the same strong secondary we are used to seeing as fans of the Denver Broncos. They need help.
