Denver Broncos: Earl Thomas reports to Seahawks Wednesday
Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas is still disgruntled, but he’s returned to the team just in time for a week one matchup against the Denver Broncos.
Seattle Seahawks star safety Earl Thomas is reporting to the team just in the nick of time for the start of the regular season.
Thomas was the subject of offseason trade rumors specifically involving the Dallas Cowboys after he told Dallas head coach Jason Garrett after a regular season game to ‘come get’ him in the offseason.
With just a few days before the start of the 2018 season, Thomas is begrudgingly returning to the Seahawks.
He’s returning to Seattle, where his fines and fees for missing practices will be waived.
The Seahawks opted to keep their Pro Bowl safety instead of trading him to Dallas for a second-round draft pick.
That’s a hefty price to turn down for a player approaching the age of 30 like Thomas, even as good as he has been. The Seahawks reportedly want more than that, even with his contract issue and the fact that he doesn’t want to be with the team.
Perhaps they will franchise tag him this offseason and find a way to get more in a trade, but it seems highly unlikely.
Now, instead of missing the team’s first game in Denver, Thomas will likely be roaming around the back end of the secondary, causing problems and playing a little ticked off, at that.
The Broncos probably should have been planning on Thomas making a return anyway, but this certainly alters their strategy going into Sunday. Thomas, like Von Miller, is a player opposing teams simply have to account for on every single play.
The Cowboys did their part in trying to acquire Thomas’ services. He probably felt like it was going to happen, and you can tell by the tone in his Instagram post that he’s clearly not happy to be with Seattle.
Maybe a trade can still happen before the NFL’s trade deadline around midseason, but he will be there for the Denver game.
