Decision 5: Keeping six off-ball linebackers

The oddest decision John Elway and the Broncos made was keeping six off-ball inside linebackers on the roster.

They weren’t getting rid of Brandon Marshall, Todd Davis, or Josey Jewell, but I had been putting together 53-man roster predictions that included just those three players at the position.

That was obviously my worst prediction, as the Broncos kept double the amount of inside linebackers I initially thought they might.

The team plays the majority of its snaps defensively in a nickel alignment. This means having six inside linebackers will not do a heck of a lot for the team in terms of defensive rotation.

Where this helps the Broncos is on special teams. The future is also being considered here as the team is very high on Ale

xander Johnson.

The Broncos decided to keep Joseph Jones — a mid-season acquisition in 2017 — and sixth-round pick Keishawn Bierria on the active roster in addition to Marshall, Davis, Jewell, and Johnson.

It’s not likely all six remain on the active roster all year, but this is obviously a position the Broncos felt could help the team not only defensively, but perhaps more so on special teams.
