In regards to the safety position, I believe the Broncos will keep five. Those five are Darian Stewart, Justin Simmons, Will Parks, Su’a Cravens (who will get his first and only preseason action on Thursday), and Dymonte Thomas.
I think the first four are locks to make the team. If any of those five are cut, it would be Thomas, but I don’t think that’s happening. He has earned his way onto the 53-man roster.
Now, let’s talk about the other safety with Thomas as his last name.
Shamarko Thomas was signed late as a free agent and when he got into a game for the Broncos, he left due to an eye injury, which turned out to be a detached retina. Thomas has recently gotten his vision back and should be fine for tonight’s game.
Thomas was the victim of the new “lowering the head” rule enforced by the league this year. It’s disappointing because I’m sure he has the talent, but the team can’t have a lot of unnecessary penalties during the regular season.
In five seasons in the league, Thomas has recorded 62 tackles.
If the Broncos do not retain him, his career likely would continue somewhere else. The biggest problem for Thomas is the depth of the Broncos’ safeties, and not his overall talent.
Whatever team Thomas plays for in 2018, they will be getting a great player.
