C.J. Smith, CB

C.J. Smith is a classic example of a roster bubble player at this juncture of the preseason.

Cornerback is a position where the Broncos do not have enviable depth like they have in the past. It’s not a position with even a solidified number three at this point, although with Tramaine Brock’s career games logged and Isaac Yiadom’s rookie moments, it feels inevitable Brock will start the year as the number three.

The Broncos have two third-round draft picks behind Chris Harris Jr., Bradley Roby, and Tramaine Brock at this point, and they likely have 10 total defensive back spots available.

Would they be willing to cut Brendan Langley and try to get him on the practice squad?

C.J. Smith has almost had an interception two weeks in a row, yet he’s not being talked about much outside of probably the coaches as a player that is going to be counted on to contribute. Could he be solidifying himself as CB5 behind the rookie Yiadom?

It’s possible.

Both Langley and Yiadom have been burned too many times this preseason for the Broncos to pass on even the veteran options available in trades or free agency. Smith was a waiver claim and someone valued by teams around the league (he was acquired by Seattle in a trade earlier this offseason before failing a physical).

Smith has done his part to make some plays but has he been consistent enough to get a roster spot?

That’s the burning question. Preseason game four will be huge for him, and for a number of players fighting for jobs.
