Denver Broncos: The Good and Bad vs the Washington Redskins
The Bad
When it comes to a victory in the National Football League, it is usually hard to find negatives. For the most part, the Broncos did everything very well. Sometimes you need to look at missed opportunities.
That’s what I thought of when watching the team defeat the Washington Redskins. Five players: Phillip Lindsay, Jordan Leslie, Jeff Heuerman, Jake Butt, and River Cracraft all had one catch each.
It’s important for players to get into a rhythm before the regular season starts. Unfortunately, these fives guys didn’t do much in terms of catching the football. Even though four of these five players are surely going to make the initial 53-man roster, they are all young and any experience they get is good.
Broncos took Chad Kelly out early
Chad Kelly has made a strong case to be the team’s backup quarterback for the 2018 season. It is important to get as many reps as possible during the preseason, primarily for the young players.
Kelly missed all of last season with injuries he sustained in college, so even though he is in his second year, he is behind in terms of experience.
Denver put Paxton Lynch into the game sooner than I expected them to. I fully expected Kelly to see most, if not all, of the second half. The positive that came out of the decision to play Lynch is that the Broncos’ third-string quarterback may have upped his trade value.
Shamarko Thomas eye injury
The Broncos signed safety Shamarko Thomas nearly two weeks ago because fellow safety Jamal Carter tore his hamstring and is out for the season.
Thomas suffered an eye injury during Friday’s game and had to be transported to a local hospital. It was reported that Thomas was treated for a possible detached retina. Ouch!
It remains to be seen how long Thomas will need to recover, and whether or not he will have another opportunity at making the final 53-man roster. But with the injury to Carter, the Broncos may keep Thomas and see if he improves well enough to make an impact on the team in 2018.
