Isaiah McKenzie, WR/RS

Isaiah McKenzie is one of the players in focus as the Broncos take on the Washington Redskins in week three of preseason action.

McKenzie has shown this preseason great improvement as a punt returner, not only catching every punt (including one where he called for fair catch and was blasted anyway) but taking one back for a touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings.

McKenzie’s roster spot is up in the air at this point for a couple of reasons.

First and foremost, despite the fact that he hasn’t muffed any punts, he fumbled to essentially close the door on a possible fourth-quarter comeback against the Chicago Bears.

Second, McKenzie needs to show he can do more than just return punts. He needs to make an impact elsewhere on special teams and on the Broncos’ offense.

If McKenzie is only capable of returning punts, that’s too small of a niche as someone like Phillip Lindsay could take over on returns if need be.

Versatility is critical for a bottom-of-the-roster player. Right now, McKenzie is a one-trick pony and there are major question marks surrounding that one trick.
