Young running backs

Royce Freeman was in vintage Oregon form in the Broncos’ preseason opener, bursting through the middle of the line for a big touchdown before using his outstanding foot quickness to bounce outside and finish the run for a touchdown.

Freeman seems very close to surpassing Devontae Booker as the Broncos’ ‘lead’ running back with Booker taking the first reps as the Broncos’ third-down back.

Fellow rookie Phillip Lindsay has also taken hold of a roster spot and has to continue playing well in games to prove he is not going anywhere.

Lindsay has exceptional speed, quickness, hands, and football instincts.

He understands how to get open and how to make plays in the open field. He might be the most exciting bottom-of-the-roster player the Broncos have right now and he’s gaining steam as someone who will almost undoubtedly have a role on the offense in the regular season.

The Broncos may also try to feature De’Angelo Henderson and Dave Williams a bit more in this game. It doesn’t seem like Henderson is necessarily fighting for a roster spot, but he needs to prove he’s still the same guy from last year’s preseason and regular season finale.

The Broncos are really excited about this young stable of backs and I think their hope is that they will be able to keep all of them around, whether on the active roster or practice squad.
