Denver Broncos General Manager John Elway was asked today about the possibility of signing quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Elway said that Kaepernick “had his chance” to be a Bronco.

Even before the Denver Broncos elevated quarterback Chad Kelly to second-string for this week in practice, there have been questions about whether or not the team would bring in a veteran quarterback to backup Case Keenum.

One free agent quarterback who won’t be an option is Colin Kaepernick.

Asked about the possibility of the team signing Kaepernick, general manager John Elway brought up the fact that the Broncos made him an offer in the past and he turned it down. The offer came when the team had Trevor Siemian as the starter and Paxton Lynch as his backup.

In 2016, while trying to work out a trade with the 49ers, the Broncos asked Kaepernick to take a pay cut. He refused, therefore the trade didn’t fall through. With that, Denver seems to have moved on from any consideration of signing Kaepernick, who has been a free agent since opting out of his contract in 2017.

So, why does there continue to be questions about the possibility of the Broncos signing Kaepernick?

At this point in time, the quarterback position in Denver is a question mark behind starter Case Keenum. Chad Kelly, who saw his first National Football League preseason action last week, bumped ahead of Paxton Lynch this week, and has been taking reps with the second-string offense.

The inexperience behind Keenum is why Elway has been asked multiple times about signing Colin Kaepernick. Although the former 49ers quarterback had two solid years in 2013 and 2014, the next two seasons didn’t quite go as planned.

Would Kaepernick have made a big impact on the Broncos if he signed? I’m not so sure. There are definitely some solid options that are available, and some who are potentially available for the Broncos to acquire.

The problem with sticking with Kelly is his inexperience in the league. What happens if Keenum goes down with an injury? The Broncos aren’t completely comfortable sticking with Kelly as the #2, so Elway has not ruled out the possibility of signing a veteran.

If/when the Broncos acquire a veteran backup, their options currently include current New York Jet Teddy Bridgewater, Baltimore Ravens’ Robert Griffin III, and free agent Matt Moore, among others.

The Broncos are clearly not happy with their current situation at backup quarterback, and it feels more and more likely that they will bring in a veteran to go into the game in the event Keenum goes down with an injury.

As for Colin Kaepernick, it looks like he will need to find a new city to take his talents.
