The Denver Broncos opened up joint practices with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday and Vance Joseph wasn’t pleased with the second-team defense…

The Denver Broncos opened up practice against the Chicago Bears and before we get to the good, we’ll take a look at the bad.

Or, if you’re asking Broncos head coach Vance Joseph, the ‘terrible’.

Joseph was not pleased with the way his second-team defense looked in the Broncos’ first joint practice with the Bears, calling it terrible as he was asked to assess practice in front of the media.

Joseph also acknowledged that the Broncos are dealing with some injuries and are down a lot of players, but that didn’t change the fact that he felt his guys should have played better.

Veteran backup quarterback Chase Daniel apparently picked apart the Broncos’ backup secondary and it left a bad taste in Joseph’s mouth.

In addition to being down to just five safeties for practice along with just six cornerbacks, the Broncos didn’t have one of their top edge players on the second-team defense, Shaquil Barrett, who was out of practice with a hamstring injury.

Reports out of camp indicated the Bears were having success specifically with their tight ends, and the Broncos’ big matchup tight end Su’a Cravens is obviously still not practicing.

Despite the fact that the second-team defense didn’t practice well, the most important part of practice was that the first-team offense and defense looked sharp, according to Joseph.

Specifically, it sounded like quarterback Case Keenum had his way at practice, making very few mistakes and exposing the Chicago Bears’ secondary.

No one expected the Broncos to be perfect in these joint practices and many might find it even a bit refreshing to hear Joseph speaking this honestly about an aspect of his team he was displeased with.
