Similar to the tight end position, the Broncos’ running back position has a lot of talent and potential and not a lot of proven on-field production in the NFL.

That’s why Devontae Booker opened camp as the team’s top running back, but the Broncos have clearly been open-minded since the NFL Draft, giving everyone a chance to run with the first-team offense, including seventh-round pick Dave Williams.

Williams was fourth on the team’s initial depth chart, and if he can prove his worth on special teams, that might be a huge initial edge for him.

Watching his college tape, it’s clear Williams can pass protect. He’s a big body with some nice feet and power, and he can catch the ball. He reminds me of a more refined running back version of Juwan Thompson, who was another jack-of-all-trades but more a linebacker in a running back’s body.

Williams’ toughest competition might be Phillip Lindsay, who is a completely different type of back. Lindsay’s biggest edge right now is he holds the number one kickoff return spot.

With the new kickoff rules, Lindsay’s spot there could end up being very significant.
