Shane Ray’s setback

There were not many negative stories to come out of Broncos OTAs, but the most unfortunate news came from the outside linebacker position.

Deiontrez Mount was unfortunately lost for the season with an Achilles injury, while former first-round pick Shane Ray suffered a setback in his recovery from three wrist procedures in 2017.

Ray’s fifth-year option was declined by the Broncos, leading to very early speculation that he would not be with the team beyond 2018.

After the Broncos declined Ray’s fifth-year option, it was discovered that Ray would need a fourth procedure on his surgically repaired wrist, which could keep him out into the early portion of the 2018 regular season.

It is an incredibly unfortunate development for Ray, whose 2018 season is going to be a defining one for the next chapter of his career, but it’s looking more and more like Ray is going to have to hope for the best in 2018 and perhaps take a one-year ‘prove it’ deal in 2019.
