Elway Comes Up Big in the 1991 Divisional Round

John Elway is no stranger to comebacks. When they occur in the playoffs, they are something special. There have been a few moments where Elway has staged a comeback when the ultimate goal of a Super Bowl is in sight. But one of the biggest comebacks in the playoffs occurred in the 1991 playoffs.

Going up against the Houston Oilers, the Denver Broncos were at one point down 21-6 in the second quarter. It seemed as if the Oilers were on their way to the AFC Championship Game. Elway would not go away so easily.

He brought the team within five points to start the fourth quarter, but they still needed to get more points. Especially after Houston kicked a field goal to pad their lead to eight.

But Elway kept the team churning despite that. He would drive the team down and get a touchdown. Seven points down, one more to go. It was during the next drive that would define Elway’s career.

On a fourth and ten, Elway found a way to scramble out of trouble and find Mark Jackson who would sprint upfield and get the first down. The play would put them inside the Houston 25 yard line. Well within field goal range.

David Treadwell would convert on a 28-yard field goal with under 20 seconds to go in the game. It would prove to be the game winner as the Denver Broncos would advance to the AFC Championship Game.

Another staple Elway comeback. But none would hold a candle to the final comeback on this list.
