Shaquil Barrett, OLB

Shaquil Barrett has gone from being an undrafted free agent to being one of the most important players on one of the best defenses in the NFL.

Barrett, like Bradley Roby, is not always in the ‘starting lineup’ but plays more snaps than just about everyone else for the Broncos, excelling at setting the edge and stopping the run.

Barrett also plays a significant role on special teams and racked up over 800 total snaps last season.

The Broncos would like Barrett’s sack numbers to be better, but his production against the run and even getting pressures on the opposing quarterback are not to be ignored.

He’s a fan favorite but this is not just an emotional connection between the fans and a player. This is a very good player whom the Broncos need to find a way to keep around.

There are a couple of factors that could prevent Barrett from signing a long-term deal in Denver.

First of all, he may want a more prominent role and with Bradley Chubb in the lineup, Barrett will still be splitting snaps like he has his entire career.

Second, the Broncos may not offer Barrett as much money as he’s worth based on the amount they have invested in the outside linebacker position.

Having three top-flight edge players is not necessarily a luxury in the NFL anymore, but a necessity. The Broncos should find a way to keep Barrett in the fold and keep him in a prominent role.
