Paxton Lynch, age 24

The Broncos drafted Paxton Lynch in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft with the hopes that he would one day be their franchise quarterback.

Most fans had the expectation that ‘one day’ would come much sooner.

In fact, we’re still waiting on that ‘one day’.

Lynch’s development has taken much longer than anyone had hoped, and he’s struggled with some injuries in his first two NFL seasons.

The Broncos were looking at getting a very large sample size from Lynch in 2017 to be able to make a sound judgment on his future, but an injury in his start against the Oakland Raiders kept him out until the final week of the regular season, where he actually played quite well, all things considered.

Lynch’s talent is undeniable. His natural feel for the game just doesn’t seem to be there quite yet. Lynch looked like he had taken a step back in 2017 but hopefully, some continuity with Bill Musgrave coaching him can be a significant help.

Lynch has the tools to be successful in the NFL and the Broncos were impressed by the dedication he showed to get better over the course of the offseason.

We won’t know for sure how much ‘better’ Lynch is until some live bullets start flying, but there’s some reason for optimism as the Broncos passed on other options at the quarterback position this offseason to be able to see their investment in Lynch through.
