The league has made some rule changes in regards to the kickoff. Broncos Special Teams Coordinator Tom McMahon is helping the team with adjustments.

Tom McMahon is a new coach to the Denver Broncos organization. With special teams performing badly in 2017, the team decided to ax Brock Olivio and bring in Tom McMahon. Previously with the Indianapolis Colts, the Broncos are hoping he can solve the special teams woes.

One big change that will be coming for all special teams in 2018 are the new kickoff rules that were implemented. Some of the new rules include touchbacks if the ball goes into the end zone and players lining up at the 34 yard line.

The rules will hopefully reduce the amount of injuries. With the new rules, teams will need to adjust so that they are ready once the season begins. Tom McMahon has done a solid job getting the Broncos ready. But even he is trying to adjust.

“You know what, we are working on it. You probably saw that today. We’re still working on it. The hardest part is that you’re trying to roll into it… So we’re trying to get it down to where we can – just that half a second…” [Quote from Denver Broncos PR]

There is no doubt that every team in the league will have some hiccups with the new rules. But it is good that McMahon is working with this team to make sure that they get this right. They don’t want to go into the first game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks and still have issues.

I am looking forward to the special teams group this season. Hopefully Tom McMahon can get this unit back to playing smarter football. And Broncos Country is praying for no more muffed punts in 2018. Until we see the process of the team, we can only hope.
