The Denver Broncos had an open roster spot, and they filled it with former Colorado State quarterback Nick Stevens, a rookie UDFA…

The Denver Broncos announced they have signed undrafted free agent quarterback Nick Stevens out of Colorado State.

Stevens is now the fourth quarterback on the Broncos’ roster behind Case Keenum, Paxton Lynch, and Chad Kelly.

The team made the signing official on their social media accounts:

Stevens said after the NFL Draft’s conclusion, “Any opportunity I can get, I’m down,” and he’s certainly had plenty of opportunities.

He was invited to both the Washington Redskins and Green Bay Packers rookie minicamp but wasn’t signed by either team.

The Broncos decided throughout the 2018 NFL Draft and after the draft that they didn’t want to add a fourth quarterback to the fray, even for rookie camp. Now, apparently, that has changed.

Stevens has been a durable player for Colorado State, and would you believe me if I told you he was a team captain at CSU?

That’s been a theme for every single player the Broncos added in this year’s rookie class, it feels like, and Stevens backed up his being voted a team captain with excellent play on the field.

He was named first-team All-Mountain West this past season over Buffalo Bills first-round pick Josh Allen. That obviously doesn’t mean he’s the better prospect, but he’s endeared himself to many local football fans thanks to never missing a game due to injury, and consistent production over the past three seasons.

Stevens led the Mountain West in just about every major passing category, but the best statistic on his 2017 resumé is a team statistic.

In 2017, the Rams’ offense ranked second in the country in third-down conversion percentage at 50.3 percent. That’s a staggering rate and obviously, that reflects very well on the quarterback position.

As a matter of fact, Stevens ranked fifth in the country last year with 54 first down throws on third down plays. He attempted 124 such passes and completed 76.

In preparation for the NFL, Stevens has been training with former CSU coach and Denver-based Steve Fairchild, who has also been working with Chad Kelly this offseason.

There’s nothing wrong with bringing in another arm for training camp, and Stevens certainly is familiar with the territory. He threw for 8,554 yards, 70 touchdowns, and just 27 interceptions in his playing career at CSU.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein did not like Stevens’ arm strength coming out of college, nor did he think his athleticism or frame would hold up at the next level.

The rest of Stevens’ scouting report reads a lot like that of Washington State’s Luke Falk.

The Broncos’ roster is full at 90 players once again.
