Despite having just four fingers on his left hand, Fumagalli has some of the best hands at the tight end position in this year’s draft.
This selection also confirms the Broncos’ love for Big Ten tight ends. Right now on the roster, their top five projected tight ends — Jake Butt (Michigan), Jeff Heuerman (Ohio State), Austin Traylor (Wisconsin), Matt LaCosse (Illinois), and Fumagalli (Wisconsin) — all came from Big Ten schools.
One of the major reasons for that? Tight ends that come from the Big Ten are generally some of the most pro-ready when it comes to taking on blocking responsibilities as well as running a variety of routes.
Fumagalli is no exception there, having paid his dues as a blocker at Wisconsin, and proving himself to be a pretty good one considering he has a leaner frame at 6-foot-6 and around 250 pounds.
Fumagalli was coached at Wisconsin by Paul Chryst, whose brother Geep Chryst is the Broncos’ current tight ends coach. This was the team’s third straight selection from a Big Ten school, and their third selection of a player they coached at the Senior Bowl.
Hopefully, Fumagalli can prove himself as a receiver and get into the rotation to provide the Broncos with a weapon in the intermediate passing game. He can help out on third downs and in the red zone immediately.
