Kicker Brandon McManus and his big leg were not challenged last offseason when he signed an extension with the Broncos.
That proved to be somewhat of a mistake.
The Broncos opting to bring in no other kickers last offseason allowed them to add another player at another position to compete, but it prevented McManus from being pushed competitively.
This year, they signed former Texas A&M kciker Taylor Bertolet, who led the nation with five 50+ yard field goals in 2016 and had 185 touchback kicks in four seasons.
Bertolet has a big enough leg to compete with McManus, and could end up surprisingly pushing him for a job. McManus saw his field goal percentage dip 10 percent last year, an unacceptable figure.
The Broncos were also not pleased with Riley Dixon’s punting, after he had a couple of kicks blocked and a couple more returned for touchdowns. They hope to have rectified that issue by signing Marquette King to a three-year contract.
Casey Kreiter will once again be snapping these guys the football, but he will have competition as well from Christian Kuntz, as we mentioned earlier in this piece.
