Third Round, 71st overall: Kyle Lauletta, QB, Richmond

The Broncos passed on the quarterback position in the first round, and one of their top targets on day two could very well be the small school quarterback with a ton of intrigue — Kyle Lauletta.

Lauletta has first round intangibles, and that’s not just draft talk fluff. This guy understands the game of football, and is able to quickly adapt to new styles of offense.

He had different coordinators every year the past three years at Richmond.

At the Senior Bowl, he made quick progressions from day one to the day of the actual game itself, and I came away very impressed.

There’s a decent chance Lauletta will be picked in the second round, and the Broncos might not wait this long to get him. If they feel he has franchise QB potential, why wait until 71 to get him?

There are still a number of players available at the quarterback position that could be of interest to NFL teams, and Lauletta is one of them. He’s got starter upside but his transition from Richmond to the NFL is going to take a bit of time.

That said, I think he’s a perfect fit for this Denver offense, and he will absorb a lot over the next couple of years. He’s a smart player who makes good decisions with the football, and he’s got excellent athletic ability.

This would be a good pick at 40, much less 71, but because of where he went to school, I think there’s a chance he could fall here.
