The Denver Broncos are celebrating after the way the board fell on day one of the 2018 NFL Draft, where they were able to select the draft’s top defensive player in Bradley Chubb.

The Broncos didn’t necessarily have a pressing need on the defensive line or at outside linebacker, but because of the way John Elway approached free agency, filling needs that way and freeing the team up to truly go best player available at pick number five, they had a plethora of options.

If the right quarterback fell, the Broncos could have taken him.

If the top players were gone and no quarterbacks the Broncos wanted were available, the Broncos could have traded down.

The situation that presented itself on Thursday was one that John Elway did not see coming. As a matter of fact, Elway said that when the Broncos were going through their mock draft scenarios, the idea of Chubb being available did not come up.
