There is definitely a possibility of the Denver Broncos trading down in the draft. They could get a second pick in the first round…

The 2018 NFL Draft is quickly approaching. There has been a lot of discussion about what the Denver Broncos will do.

One option the Broncos could look at is trading down. Who would they trade with? Well, it depends on what player they are targeting. Is it a quarterback? If they are, in fact, aiming to draft a quarterback in the first round, the decision to trade down would make no sense.

Here is an interesting scenario, as noted in NFL Network’s Charley Casserly’s latest mock draft: The Broncos trading with the Buffalo Bills (#12 and #22 overall).  Securing two first-round draft picks would be a great way to improve the team, depending on what they actually do with the selections.

In Casserly’s mock draft, the players he has Denver selecting are Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith with the 12th pick, and Texas A&M wide receiver Christian Kirk with the 22nd pick. By doing this, the Broncos would be giving up the chance to draft one of the high-ranked quarterbacks in this year’s draft. They would have to be very, very convinced that they will have the opportunity to draft a solid quarterback in a later round.

Casserly has four quarterbacks going in the first round: USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, as well as Wyoming’s Josh Allen. Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield has been linked to the Broncos plenty of times after the team specifically asked to have him on their Senior Bowl team.

In all honesty, the Broncos could afford to pass on a quarterback in the first round after signing former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum to a two-year deal. That move allows whoever the Broncos draft to sit for a couple of years and watch and learn behind Keenum. It would be an interesting move.

While sticking with Keenum (the Broncos confirmed that he is the team’s 2018 starter), they would be filling two needs with quality players.

A flaw in this mock for the Broncos? they would be passing up the chance to draft guard Quenton Nelson of Notre Dame. Guard is one of the team’s biggest needs. Nelson is considered by many to be the best player in this year’s draft. Do you take a chance and draft two players at positions that are less of a need than others?

It all depends on how you feel about players on day two and three. The Broncos would have to strike gold to make up for passing up on a quarterback and/or Nelson in the first round.

If the Broncos stick with the fifth overall pick, and that being the only pick they have in the first round, I say it will be Baker Mayfield. However, it would not surprise me if the team decides to trade down with a team to select somebody else. The question is, are they willing to take the risk?

We will see on draft day. Either way, I think the team will be getting a good player no matter what spot they end up choosing in the draft, which is just over three weeks away.
