The Denver Broncos will reportedly fly out to Los Angeles to work out one of the 2018 NFL Draft’s top quarterback prospects, Sam Darnold…

The Denver Broncos — as well as the rest of the NFL — didn’t get to see Sam Darnold throw at the Scouting Combine. The Broncos were also unable to send their full contingent of decision makers to USC for Darnold’s pro day.

Though the team made time to go and watch Baker Mayfield’s pro day, Josh Rosen’s pro day, and sent Gary Kubiak to Josh Allen’s pro day, the Broncos are taking a more intimate approach to getting up close with Sam Darnold.

Multiple reports indicate the Broncos will fly to Los Angeles to put Darnold through a private pre-draft workout.

Darnold is the top quarterback on my draft board this year. There are a number of players worthy of that distinction, namely Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen. If the Broncos are able to get Darnold, I would be shocked.

Everything right now seems to indicate that Darnold will be the top overall pick to the Cleveland Browns, but the Browns obviously have not made that decision final just yet.

Darnold could be the preferred choice of the Broncos because there would be no immediate pressure to play him. He’s not 100 percent ready to start in the NFL but has huge upside, and would obviously be able to sit and learn behind Case Keenum for a year.

Darnold won’t turn 21 until June. There are no questions about his physical abilities but he has made some questionable decisions with the football leading to crippling turnovers.

After watching all of his games over the past two years, I think Darnold compares most favorably to Jameis Winston. Darnold is a little more athletic than Winston, but tries to play the ‘hero’ role just the same.

The Broncos would do well to be able to snag Darnold at number five, or even trade a few picks and move up to number four and get him if the top three teams decide to pass.
