Second Round (40th overall): Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State

Why Leighton Vander Esch?

The Broncos have their top two starting linebackers in Brandon Marshall and Todd Davis under contract for the next couple of years, but for salary cap purposes, this could be a look to 2019.

Vander Esch is perfectly capable of starting right away in the NFL, which is why this pick makes sense. The Broncos need a player that can step in and start right away, given the likelihood of injuries at the position and their lack of depth last season.

Having this type of a physical playmaker with the physical makeup of a defensive end would give the Broncos’ defense a leader for the future, a player who can rack up tackles for loss, blitz the quarterback, and quarterback the defense himself.

Vander Esch has the type of fiery personality you love at the linebacker position.
