Tight end is one of the positions left to sign in free agency for the Denver Broncos and Clive Walford might interest the team…
The Oakland Raiders cut ties with Clive Walford, a former 2015 third round pick. The former Miami Hurricanes tight end has not amounted to much with the Raiders. However, 2016 was his best season as the Raiders tight end accumulating 359 yards and three touchdowns. Walford had over 300+ yards receiving twice.
Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave was with the Raiders under the same position title during that season. It was also Derek Carr’s best season.
As a Hurricane and NFL Draft prospect, Walford showed tremendous athleticism spreading the field as a receiver. But, the Raiders never used him properly and Walford never took advantage of the opportunities. Walford is 26-years old and still has many years ahead of him.
If signed by the Denver Broncos to a short term deal, look for Musgrave to utilize him to his strengths as a passing target.

The Broncos’ leading receiver at tight end was A.J. Derby, but he was waived later in the season and signed with the Miami Dolphins. Virgil Green is a similar type of player as Walford; however, Green has been ineffective as a receiver his whole Denver Broncos career.
Green signed with Los Angeles Chargers in free agency. The only remaining in-line tight ends are Jeff Heuerman and Austin Traylor. Heuerman is a mere image of Clive Walford. He’s another young tight end who has failed to produce consistently on the field.
Unlike Heuerman, Walford has better stats to prove his value.
Signing Walford does not take the team away from drafting another developmental player at the position. Remember, Jake Butt will play more on the line of scrimmage.
Yet, the team needs another threat to take pressure off of Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Walford given promise and potential still would be in conversation for day one contributor in the passing game. The Broncos’ leading receiver at tight end Derby only had 224 yards. Walford had 100+ more than that in two seasons.
Clive Walford might be a name to watch for the Denver Broncos now with his recent release.
