If the Denver Broncos are okay with their quarterback situation, I believe drafting Roquan Smith would be ideal for the team.

The options for the Denver Broncos with the fifth overall pick are endless. They could trade up, trade down, or stick with their pick. Denver could also go quarterback, offensive line, maybe even defense with the fifth pick. I want to talk about Roquan Smith and how drafting him at number five or a trade down and drafting him later would be ideal.

When it comes to Denver’s quarterback situation, they have Case Keenum. The former Minnesota Viking breakout player will enter training camp as the starter. After what he did last season, that comes as no surprise. Paxton Lynch and Chad Kelly follow right behind him. Elway said that he wants to give Lynch another chance to prove himself. Drafting a quarterback with the fifth pick would send a signal to Broncos Country that perhaps they made a mistake with Paxton.

The last two drafts saw the Broncos go offense. But if they are mostly content with what they have, going defense might not be a bad idea.

In what is perhaps my biggest reason for going with Roquan Smith at number five? The inside linebacker position itself. Yes, the Denver Broncos did agree to a three year deal with Todd Davis this offseason. But his coverage abilities have been horrendous. In a league that has seen a lot of running backs and tight ends catching the football, having that coverage guy will be key.

How does Roquan Smith fit with the Denver Broncos?

Roquan Smith fits the plans for the Denver Broncos on the defensive side of the football. Just from watching the Rose Bowl game, he has a knack for doing well in pass coverage. It is something that the Broncos have lacked for the last couple seasons.

Next: Options with the fifth pick are wide open for Broncos

If the Broncos decide to draft Smith at number five, I can see him being placed in passing down situations. With the various amounts of running backs that are pass catchers and tight ends like Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham, it would be important for the Broncos to be ready for anything.

If the Denver Broncos are okay with the offense, minus a few pieces, Roquan Smith would be ideal for the team, He could be an X-Factor to help Denver get back to the postseason.
