The Denver Broncos are planning to sign quarterback Case Keenum when free agency opens on Wednesday, and the money could be ridiculous…
Good morning, Broncos Country!
Did you think you would wake up to the news that the Denver Broncos had agreed to sign quarterback Case Keenum at the start of free agency?
Well, that’s exactly what happened while most of us were asleep, but we’re all thankful for Cody Roark who got the breaking news out to you right after it happened.
As I have stated all offseason, I am a fan of Case Keenum. I like him as a person, as a player, and as a leader. The biggest question I have with this move deals with the financial details, and there are some reports out there that range anywhere from $15 million per season to $20 million per season.
Keenum certainly played like a $20 million quarterback (per year) last season.

That said, if the Broncos intend on drafting a quarterback still with the fifth overall pick, this deal does not make much sense to me. We have no idea the years or the dollars on Keenum’s contract, but right now it sounds like it’ll be a shorter deal (possibly three years?) and hopefully the Broncos are able to get a low year one cap hit to be able to supplement this signing with some other moves.
They still have needs, and if they decide to take a quarterback in the first round, it would indicate to me that they are prepared for another full-blown quarterback controversy.
No one has definitively said either way whether or not they will take a quarterback at number five overall. It might be a better decision for them to use that pick on another area of need, like drafting Quenton Nelson, or possibly moving back and out of the top five altogether and collecting multiple first round picks.
There are quarterbacks the Broncos could look to develop outside of the top five, although certainly you’re taking a calculated risk moving off of that spot.
Hopefully the Broncos were able to get Keenum to come play at somewhat of a bargain price in terms of the cap hits. We’ll give you more details as they become available.
