Should the Denver Broncos abandon the Kirk Cousins plan in free agency? Here’s the latest on where the top FA QB might end up…
NFL free agency is about to get underway, and the Kirk Cousins rumors are starting to heat up.
Right now, it appears as though the Broncos are going to have to make a comeback on the Minnesota Vikings if they want to get Cousins to Denver.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network offered the latest on Monday morning:
First of all, kudos to Cousins for not wanting to do what Brock Osweiler did. That was one of the most idiotic things I have seen in free agency in my time covering the event. Especially when, after the signing, it was rumored that Osweiler chose the Texans in part because of a connection he’d made to the coaching staff on Hard Knocks.
Not good.
If the Broncos want Cousins, it’s likely they are going to have to compete with what other teams are offering, which is a three-year, fully guaranteed contract. We know from reports that are out there that two teams are prepared to make Cousins that kind of offer, and one would have to be the New York Jets, who have basically unlimited funds right now.
The other team is rumored to be the Vikings, simply because — like Rap Sheet said — they are in the ‘driver’s seat’.
Right now, I would be shocked if Cousins is not the new quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings when all is said and done. I’m sure he’s going to get some really strong offers from other teams, but him signing in Minnesota seems like where we’re heading.
If that’s the case, then the Broncos are in an interesting predicament.

We know the Broncos were interested in Tyrod Taylor via trade, which might have given us a bit of a hint at their spending range for a ‘bridge’ quarterback, as well as the length of a contract they would be looking for.
It also might give us a hint that if the Broncos can’t get Cousins, they’d move on to drafting the future.
There are a lot of rumors going around about Case Keenum and the Broncos right now, and that seems like a fit on paper.
The Broncos can pay Keenum. They have Gary Kubiak in the front office. They need someone to help them win games. But are the Broncos willing to build around Keenum? Will they guarantee him a starting job, even this year?
There are so many factors at play, I just don’t know if Keenum would choose the Broncos.
It does sound like the Broncos want him, however, so we’ll see if that interest is mutual.
