Beau Allen could be a free agency fit for Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are always in the market for a bargain in free agency, and Philadelphia Eagles free agent DL Beau Allen could fit the bill…

So much focus and attention is paid to the Denver Broncos’ quarterback situation, and for good reason.

The Broncos are going to be big players for Kirk Cousins in free agency, but in the event they are unable to land him or are able to get him at a low enough cap hit to address other needs in free agency, one player that really intrigues me is free agent defensive tackle Beau Allen.

Allen has been a backup with the Philadelphia Eagles, and when given the opportunity, has really proven he’s worthy of a more expanded role.

The Broncos have taken players in similar situations in recent years, and reaped the benefits.

Some players who were spot starters on other teams that came to Denver and flourished in a more prominent role include former Baltimore Ravens safety Darian Stewart, who became a Pro Bowl player with the Broncos. Or how about Emmanuel Sanders with the Steelers?

There are other less extreme examples like last year’s signing of Zach Kerr from the Colts. Kerr didn’t play a ton of snaps with Denver due to injury, but when he did get on the field, he proved why the Broncos were eager to snatch him up as a free agent.

There could be more of a market for Allen than some of those other guys, who were second or third wave free agents, but I would love to see the Broncos come to terms on a three-year deal with Allen, who would take over for Domata Peko when his contract is up at the end of the year.

The Broncos will rotate Peko in and out of the lineup anyways, so while Allen might not get his name in the starting lineup every week, it’s likely he would end up playing more snaps than Peko anyway.

More from Broncos Free Agency

Right now, the Broncos’ top five on the defensive line looks pretty well set with Derek Wolfe, Peko, Adam Gotsis, Shelby Harris, and Zach Kerr, but they need a more long-term solution at nose tackle.

Allen could be that player.

I think this is a player not enough people are talking about, and because he’s not really a hyped free agent, the Broncos may be able to snag him at a nice value and get him on a decent year one cap hit and pay him more down the line.

If they could secure him for 3-4 years at around $4-5 million per year, that would be a really intriguing player to add to an already stout front.

The Broncos were one of the league’s most improved teams versus the run last season and Allen would enhance not only that, but give them a player that is hungry to prove he can be an every-down defensive lineman and prominent player in this league.
