The Denver Broncos were reportedly in trade talks with the Washington Redskins for Su’a Cravens, and those talks are not dead, per a report…

According to Denver Broncos insider Mike Klis of 9News, the trade talks the Broncos were having with the Washington Redskins for safety/linebacker Su’a Cravens are not dead.

Of course, no trade can be made official until the start of the new league year, which happens on March 14th, but that hasn’t prevented teams from making any deals to this point.

As a matter of fact, some really big names, even in the Broncos’ own division, have been dealt already this offseason (Alex Smith, Marcus Peters).

Within this article, which is mostly about the Broncos’ pursuit of Kirk Cousins, is a little nugget from Klis that the Broncos’ trade talks with Washington are not dead.

That’s an encouraging thing to read, especially after Jay Gruden said publicly that the team was not interested in trading their former second round pick, who was just recently reinstated to the NFL.

Cravens has a history injury-wise that is somewhat concerning, and he left the Redskins this past year with rumors he might retire from the game altogether.

That’s not exactly going to help increase his value, and upon being reinstated, there were instantly rumors that the Redskins were looking to trade him.

Cravens would fill an important role for the Broncos as a safety/linebacker. The Broncos could essentially use Cravens in the box almost exclusively as well as match him up with running backs and tight ends in the passing game.

When healthy, he’s a very good player.

Another nugget Klis dropped in that post is that even if the Broncos do trade for Cravens, they will keep Darian Stewart. I’ve said this before, but I will say it again — cutting Stewart this offseason makes virtually no sense. He has had a couple of great seasons with the Broncos, and is coming off of one down year.

It would cost Denver more to release or trade Stewart in the form of a dead money hit than it would save them against the cap. That’s not a sensible roster move to make. John Elway and the Broncos’ front office have been very stingy when it comes to accepting dead money hits on contracts. Even in the case of Donald Stephenson, they were able to work out a renewed contract.

Many expect that to be the case with Menelik Watson as well.

In any case, the Broncos are still engaged with the Redskins and as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network originally reported, they are the team that appears most interested in acquiring Cravens’ services.
