Taking a look at a possible blockbuster trade scenario between the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills that could happen if the Broncos land a FA QB…

As we get set for a wild ride in NFL free agency as well as the 2018 NFL Draft, we need to be on the lookout for some blockbuster trades as well.

The Denver Broncos haven’t been involved in many big time blockbuster deals, but one possible trade scenario that keeps popping up involves the Buffalo Bills and their two first round picks in 2018.

If the Broncos are able to land their quarterback in free agency — whether Kirk Cousins, Case Keenum, A.J. McCarron, or whomever — ideas have been floating around about Denver and Buffalo coming together on a deal involving the fifth overall pick in the draft.

That’s obviously one of the Broncos’ biggest bargaining chips in a draft that’s loaded with talent at quarterback, as Nicki Jhabvala points out.

We’ve looked into some trade scenarios in mock drafts, but I wanted to dive a little deeper into some more options.

All of these ideas are, of course, assuming the Broncos land a quarterback in free agency, though they could also look to work something out with the Bills that involves one of their current quarterbacks…

Idea #1

Broncos receive: 1st round picks (21st, 22nd overall), OT Cordy Glenn, 2nd round pick

Bills receive: 1st round pick (5th overall), QB Trevor Siemian

In this situation, the Bills would be giving up quite a bit of valuable draft capital to get the fifth overall pick, but they have the extra assets to do so right now and there were also rumors the team was interested in possibly trading Cordy Glenn at this past season’s trade deadline.

This would allow Buffalo to get a quarterback they want at number five overall, as well as an experienced backup/bridge player on a cheap one-year deal in Trevor Siemian.

For Denver, you’re looking at three premium prospects in this year’s draft plus a starting right tackle. That’s a deal we could all get on board for. The biggest question here would be how things would work out financially. The Broncos would have to move some things around or look to get their free agent quarterback on a low year one cap hit to make this move possible, because Glenn carries a cap number over $14 million this season. It does drop off a bit after this year.

Idea #2

Broncos receive: 1st round picks (21st, 22nd overall), 2nd round pick (56th overall), 5th round pick (149th overall), future 2nd round pick

Bills receive: 1st round pick (5th overall), 4th round pick (105th overall)

In this trade, the two sides each exchange only draft picks. Buffalo would get their QB at number five overall, and also move up 45 spots on day three.

Denver would get two first rounders, an additional second this year, move down off of one of their fourth round picks, and get an additional second rounder next year.

That pick could be crucial if Denver lands a quarterback like Cousins and they need the extra draft capital to supplement their roster.

Idea #3

Broncos receive: 1st round picks (21st, 22nd overall), RB LeSean McCoy, future 2nd round pick

Bills receive: 1st round pick (5th overall), RB C.J. Anderson

Both Anderson and McCoy have trade-able contracts. The Broncos would be adding about $5 million to their cap at the RB position in this situation, but it would be a one or two-year rental and they would be relieving the Bills some cap space, hence the future second rounder added in.

The Bills would get a starting caliber running back on a reasonable contract in addition to the QB they covet.

Idea #4

Broncos receive: QB Tyrod Taylor, 1st round picks (21st, 22nd overall), 2nd round pick (56th overall), future 2nd round pick

Bills receive: QB Trevor Siemian, 1st round pick (5th overall), 4th round pick (105th overall)

In this scenario, the Broncos would obviously not have acquired any other quarterback in free agency. That could diminish their motivation to trade the fifth overall pick, but if they determine that they like someone better (like Lamar Jackson or Mason Rudolph, or perhaps even Josh Allen or Kyle Lauletta) that they could get later on, then this could be a move worth making to acquire the additional picks.

Buffalo, in this case, would be able to move on from Tyrod Taylor, getting him to a team that wants him, and also have a viable backup QB option, as well as an additional mid-round pick.

These are just some of the possibilities, and I’m sure we could come up with a few more, but for now, I think the most realistic of these options includes strictly draft picks, perhaps a player thrown in there but nobody with a huge salary. The Broncos adding C.J. Anderson, for instance, makes some sense and can help the Bills with their depth at that position.

We’ll see what ultimately happens but if the Broncos can secure a veteran quarterback, trading back with Buffalo and acquiring all of these extra picks is a really enticing option.
