The Denver Broncos can’t rule out the possibility of signing Drew Brees until the Saints figure everything out and give him a deal…
Is there such a thing as a certainty in NFL free agency?
The Denver Broncos and every other team in the NFL for that matter can’t really afford to think so, and that’s why we’re on the topic today of Drew Brees and the fact that three weeks away from the start of free agency, the Saints still don’t have a deal done with him.
Broncos insider Mike Klis went on Orange & Blue 760 and discussed the possibility of Brees, which at this point seems like a pipe dream but until the Saints make a move, why not keep that option on the table?
For an in-depth look at why Brees not re-signing with the Saints is even a possibility at this point, check out this article from CBS in January. Brees’ contract includes a dead cap hit of $18 million in 2018 for the Saints, which will charge against their cap regardless of where he plays next season.

For that reason, the Saints are in a pickle because they are going to have to convince Brees that they present the best opportunity for him to win a championship as he’s entering the age 40 realm, though still playing at a pretty high level.
This would require the Saints and Brees to come to an agreement on a deal that likely pays Brees less than what he’s worth on the open market to sign a deal that will help the Saints on a sign of good faith from Brees that the team will surround him with the appropriate talent.
Brees may not look at the Denver Broncos as the ultimate destination to win on a one-year contract, but who knows? The Broncos in 2012 with Peyton Manning were one of the best teams that ‘never were’ and that team was less talented than the one the Broncos will field in 2018.
If the Saints and Brees don’t come to an agreement on a new deal by March 14th, the quarterback market could get a little bit more interesting.
I still feel like Brees returning to New Orleans has about a 99 percent chance of happening, but you just never know.
