According to Mike Klis, drafting a quarterback for the Denver Broncos is a ‘deep backup’ option with free agency at the forefront…

It doesn’t sound like John Elway and the Denver Broncos are really interested in a ‘blank canvas’ at the quarterback position this offseason.

Despite a pretty darn talented 2018 NFL Draft class at the quarterback position, Mike Klis of 9News says that drafting a quarterback with the fifth overall pick is a ‘deep backup’ option for the Broncos at this point.

‘Deep backup’ option, that is, to free agency, where the Broncos are going to pursue any one of Kirk Cousins, Drew Brees, A.J. McCarron, and Case Keenum.

Here’s what Klis said in this radio spot:

"“Their deep backup plan, which is — you know you don’t get Cousins, you don’t get McCarron, you don’t get Brees, you don’t get Keenum, you don’t get any of those guys — then your backup plan is taking one of those quarterbacks with the number five overall pick.”Mike Klis on Orange & Blue 760"

Klis went on to say that the team feels like they have to fix the quarterback situation ‘in a hurry’ and obviously that would explain why they are going to explore every avenue in free agency prior to making any sort of selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.

While the Broncos certainly may value some of these quarterbacks highly in the draft, the timing doesn’t appear such that they feel they can invest in a rookie and wait for them to develop into a quarterback worthy of leading this team to a title.

This would be somewhat disappointing to me. The Broncos going after a quarterback in the draft should be more than just a ‘deep backup’ plan, but I also understand the urgency for this team to win. John Elway doesn’t like that his team just went 5-11, especially since it’s a team he constructed.

It’s rare to have a single offseason where this many quality players — free agency and draft — are all available.

Klis went on to say that the Broncos will primarily set their sights on Kirk Cousins, but it’s possible that McCarron’s availability has changed things enough that if the Broncos missed out on Cousins, McCarron could be their top option.

More on that later.

Unfortunately, for those who have fallen in love with the 2018 NFL Draft class, it doesn’t seem like Elway and company are going to take a quarterback with that fifth overall pick, at least as long as all of these other options remain.
