What do the Denver Broncos have in young Chad Kelly at quarterback? Their first OTAs of 2018 may pique their curiosity…
Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly had worked his way back to the point of a possible return midway through the 2017 season, but despite the Broncos’ poor production and health at the quarterback position, he was left on injured reserve to end his rookie season.
Kelly was Vance Joseph’s ‘favorite’ quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft, and who knows why he said that when he did, but if even there’s a slight chance that he meant it, Kelly’s going to get a chance to impress the Broncos’ coaching staff when the team reports like it always does in March.
The Broncos may not be able to have a bunch of organized practices, but they will get a chance to see how far Kelly has come in terms of his health, and I think they’re going to like what they see.
Kelly may be the most competitive player the Broncos have at the quarterback position, and that’s something the coaching staff will really like.

It seems like the Broncos are going to go all-in on a veteran quarterback this offseason, meaning Kelly’s best shot this year is to be a backup in Denver, but there’s a chance we could see a lot more of what this kid can do on the field, and the Broncos would be wise to see it through.
When I studied Kelly ahead of the 2017 NFL Draft, he became one of my favorite players, one who could win with his arm or his legs.
Of course, a couple of injuries have hindered his progress the past two years, but whenever Kelly is back and fully healthy, I think he’s going to impress the Broncos’ coaching staff. Despite some questions about his off-field character, I think Kelly is the type of player that cares about his craft and wants to get better.
He proved that by working his way back from being kicked off of Clemson’s football team to going to East Mississippi Community College and all the way up to Ole Miss and now with the Broncos.
One thing people wanted from Kelly was to stay out of the news for the wrong reasons, and nearly a year into his Broncos career, all is seemingly well.
Kelly has been posting training videos on social media every now and again, and is seemingly working really hard.
Judging by that first video there, I’d say Kelly’s knee looks pretty darn good…
If he’s fully healthy, I can’t help but think Kelly will eventually impress the Broncos’ coaching staff. If nothing else, you need to have a viable backup option, and if Kelly can be that, the Broncos can keep him and overhaul the rest of the position group.
To me, Kelly is a wild card in all of the Broncos quarterback talk and could prove to be a very wise investment by the Broncos’ front office.
