Denver Broncos mock draft: Charley Casserly makes a weird pick
Longtime NFL executive and current NFL Network personality Charley Casserly made a really weird Denver Broncos mock draft pick in his projection…
It’s mock draft season and for Denver Broncos fans, that has typically meant an in-depth look at the quarterbacks and offensive linemen in the class of 2018, with an occasional dip into the Saquon Barkley pool.
It’s quite rare to see a Denver Broncos mock draft pick of a defensive player, considering how terrible this team has been on offense, but that’s exactly what we got from Charley Casserly of NFL Network.
Only, Casserly didn’t pick a defensive player you might expect for the Broncos. It wasn’t Bradley Chubb or Minkah Fitzpatrick. It wasn’t Roquan Smith or even Tremaine Edmunds, who play positions the Broncos have an actual need at.
No, no. The pick Casserly made was Marcus Davenport, a defensive end out of UTSA.
Come again?
What’s even more impressive is that Casserly had the Broncos passing on the likes of Baker Mayfield to make this selection, which probably indicates he thinks — like pretty much everyone else, at this point — that the Broncos are going to sign a quarterback in free agency, and use the fifth overall pick elsewhere.

That part of all this makes sense, but Davenport?
No slight to Davenport as a player. I think he’s going to do really well at the next level and in a draft class that is low on talent coming off the edge, he’s probably one of the crown jewels.
But at number five overall and with this roster as currently constructed?
No way.
I would probably venture to guess this would be among the last picks the Broncos would decide to make, given their current roster and the alternatives available at actual positions of need.
Unless the Broncos are somehow able to get starters at quarterback, left guard, right tackle, and inside linebacker before the draft, I don’t view this as even a remote possibility.
