With the recent trade that sends Alex Smith to the Nation’s Capital next month, could Aqib Talib stay in Denver after all?

Remember when there was a spitball trade idea that would send Aqib Talib to Kansas City and Alex Smith would play for the Denver Broncos? Well, I think it is safe to say that possibility is now out the window.

On Tuesday Night, the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins agreed to a deal that would send Alex Smith to Washington. In return, Kansas City would receive a third round pick and corner back Kendall Fuller.

I have said how the Denver Broncos will be in the running for the Kirk Cousins’ sweepstakes with the trade. But the trade helps the team in another way. I believe it keeps Aqib Talib out of the red and gold. I honestly believe that Talib will stay with the Broncos.

There are two reasons why this is the case. First, it puts the team in great shape to make a run at Kirk Cousins without having to worry about any tags that the Washington Redskins would put on the quarterback. He will likely hit the open market. That gives Elway a way to work out a deal that is cap friendly to the team.

Second, now that Kansas City has a corner back, Aqib Talib can likely stay in Denver. With the money that the Broncos could get with a few moves, it may not require losing a big time player on defense to get what the team needs.

Like I have said, do not break up the defense just to fix a few pieces on offense. It is a Super Bowl caliber defense in my eyes. No need to lose our best players on defense. Keep Talib!
