Alex Smith

Broncos fans know Alex Smith pretty well.

Despite the fact that he’s coming off of the best single season of his NFL career, I would be terrified at the prospect of adding Smith because of the cost, which is two-fold.

First of all, it’s going to require a lot in a trade. The speculation we previously alluded to is ridiculous. Mike Klis said that if the Broncos were able to get Smith for the price of Aqib Talib and a second round draft pick, they would jump at it.

If Denver is that desperate, I hope they just fork over the cash for Kirk Cousins, save the draft pick, and be done with it. Giving up major assets in a trade for a guy that has one year left on his contract and is 33 years old is a terrible, terrible idea in my opinion.

Second, Smith’s cap number this year is $20 million, and it’s only going to get higher when you have to re-negotiate a new contract. So, you’re talking about giving the Chiefs a king’s ransom of picks and/or players, and giving Smith a monster contract extension?

Count me out.
