Army OT Brett Toth worth the investment for the Denver Broncos
Whether he ends up serving two years right away or not, Army offensive tackle Brett Toth is worth the investment for the Denver Broncos…
Coming away from the 2018 Senior Bowl, the deep crop of players invited to the event was as impressive as I had expected it to be. One player that really stood out was Army offensive tackle Brett Toth, and I can’t help but think he’d be a great investment for the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos have nine, possibly 10 draft picks in the 2018 NFL Draft depending on how compensatory picks are awarded (right now, they are expected to land an additional third round pick). If that’s the case, they would have the luxury of a ‘draft-and-stash’ for a player like Toth, who is potentially about to serve two years with the Army.
That aspect of his future is still a bit unclear at this point in time, though Toth has said he will serve his two years before fulfilling his NFL dream.
That ultimately will likely affect his draft stock, as Toth would potentially be a second round player if he were going to be immediately available. The fact that he won’t be available until 2020 means that we’re likely looking at Toth getting picked on day three, and that’s fine.
The Broncos got to watch this guy play at the Senior Bowl, and were able to see the strides he made throughout the week and how impressive he was in pass protection despite playing in an option offense at West Point.
Obviously this is a guy with tremendous character, but because he didn’t play at a major program like Alabama or Clemson, his athletic ability is a bit underrated in my opinion.
Recruited as a tight end, Toth put on the weight and transitioned to the tackle position.
Army would still move him to the tight end position at times, because as much as anyone else in their offense, this guy is a weapon.
Toth does a great job in the running game of getting out into space, making blocks at the second and third level and using his athleticism and quickness to help plays develop downfield.
The Department of Defense could defer Toth’s service and there is a possibility he could play in the NFL right away, but right now, everything seems to be pointing to Toth serving the country for two years prior to entering the NFL.
The Broncos have had experience with this in the past, when they picked up Ben Garland from Air Force. Garland was signed by the Broncos as an undrafted player in 2010, and served two years with the Air Force. Following his two years, he was signed to the Broncos’ practice squad after being placed on the reserve/military list from 2010-2011.

After spending another couple of seasons on the Broncos’ practice squad while developing as an offensive lineman (Garland was a defensive player in college), he finally made a regular season appearance for the Broncos in the 2014 season. It was a pretty incredible moment, after so much time had passed since he’d signed in Denver.
The Broncos and Garland parted ways in 2015, but his NFL career was far from over. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons to their practice squad in 2015, and was signed to their active roster that December.
He’s become a key reserve for the Falcons and has shown significant development since being signed to his first NFL contract back in 2010.
I say all that to say that investing in a player like Toth would be worth the wait. Unlike Garland, he has a defined position at the next level and is very good at it. Despite the Army offense not even throwing 70 passes this past season, Toth graded out as the best run blocking tackle in the country.
It’s not easy to do that with as many reps as he had, and at as many different positions as he played up front.
To me, Toth looks like a future starter at either right or left tackle, and I think he’d be a great pickup for the Denver Broncos if he’s available on day three of the 2018 NFL Draft.
