Denver Broncos mock draft: The scary, risky scenario
Third Round (pick 1/2): Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia
First and foremost, I think the Broncos using a top 100 pick on an edge defender would be a little overkill.
I think that position group is one of the best the Broncos have right now, and they don’t need to over-draft there when the guy isn’t going to play until 2019 unless there’s some kind of injury.
Second, I think Lorenzo Carter is going to be one of the top guys we look at as ‘boom or bust’ in this draft class.
The size and athleticism are obviously there for this kid, but the production is simply not.
He has made some big plays in college, no doubt, but I would like to see more than 4.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss from a guy that I’m banking on for the future at the OLB position.
I’m also not big on using this high of a pick for a guy that is guaranteed to be a backup for multiple years. The Broncos have done that far too often, in my opinion, and it’s been a detriment to their player development. Take someone who has a chance to contribute year one.
