Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee broke the news that the Denver Broncos hired Tom McMahon as their special teams coordinator…
According to former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee, now a member of the media, the Denver Broncos have finally made a hire for their vacant special teams coordinator position.
The coach they are hiring is longtime NFL special teams coordinator Tom McMahon, a veteran coach of 10 years in the league.
Here’s McAfee’s initial tweet breaking the news:
Troy Renck seemed to confirm the report:
The Broncos needed someone to come in and coach the special teams that has experience. Brock Olivo came in last offseason and really impressed everyone with his fire and excitability, but the on-field product was less-than desirable.
The Broncos’ special teams struggled much of last season, with numerous illegal formation penalties, far too many mental errors, and too often players out of position in general.

It didn’t help that the coaching staff put its full faith in Isaiah McKenzie, who fumbled the ball seemingly on a weekly basis.
McMahon obviously comes with a high mark of recommendation from one of the best punters to have played the game in recent memory, which is a great sign.
McMahon has also coached in Kansas City and Atlanta in his NFL career.
In a ‘get to know you’ sort of article on the Colts’ official website, McMahon said that his coaching style begins with having the ‘courage to correct.’ He goes on to say that some coaches may use criticism, or some players may interpret correction that way, but if you give guys the truth, they’ll get better.
I suppose if nothing else, the Broncos need a little more honesty around the building, both amongst each other when they look in the mirror.
Hopefully McMahon can become a strong leader for a unit that desperately needs an upgrade.
