Older Veterans

The Broncos have gone the (slightly older) veteran route before at the tight end position in free agency, and honestly I’m not so sure they will do it again this year.

I could be wrong, but I wanted to throw these names out there so we aren’t surprised if Denver comes calling to someone for a quick (and short) fix at the position.

Antonio Gates, Chargers

Gates is not going to play for anyone but the Chargers. It’s Gates and Rivers, til death do they part.

Benjamin Watson, Ravens

Watson has found the fountain of youth in Baltimore, and because of the great chemistry he’s formed with Joe Flacco, it would really surprise me to see him anywhere but Baltimore next year, unless it’s on a team that has a really established quarterback situation.

Watson isn’t playing for notoriety or cash at this point — he’s going to want to win now.

Ed Dickson, Panthers

Dickson is not nearly as old as Gates and Watson (they are 37, he’s 30) so I’m putting him on the older veterans knowing that he’s not necessarily ancient or anything.

But, he is 30.

The former Oregon Duck and Baltimore Raven will be going on to his ninth NFL season, and has proven himself a very capable backup tight end in this league. If Denver would view him as both an upgrade to Virgil Green and better in a starting role than off the sideline, he could be an option.
