At the 2018 Senior Bowl, Baker Mayfield has the opportunity to change John Elway’s mind about pursuing Kirk Cousins in free agency…

Before John Elway can ‘legally’ talk to Kirk Cousins’ representatives in free agency, or before his situation is even really resolved in Washington at all, Baker Mayfield is going to have a chance to impress the Denver Broncos…

…and completely change the way they approach the offseason.

The Broncos have the opportunity to coach at the Senior Bowl after an awful season, a great consolation prize along with the top five pick they have in the 2018 NFL Draft.

That top five pick doesn’t guarantee the Broncos will have a chance to draft Mayfield, but it does give them a better chance than most teams.

Along with their opportunity to coach the North team at the Senior Bowl, the Broncos will have the Heisman Trophy winner on their roster.

Getting to spend a practice week with Mayfield and working so closely with him, the Broncos will have access to a player they are considering with a top five pick unlike most teams have on an annual basis.

With their rare opportunity to work this closely with Mayfield, I think the Oklahoma star has a chance to change Denver’s ‘Plan A’ this offseason.

It’s been reported by multiple sources that the Broncos will pursue Kirk Cousins this offseason. That part is not a secret at this point, but sometimes, plans change. If the Broncos decided over a week of getting to know Mayfield that the Heisman winner can be the future of the franchise, they could very well abandon their plans to pursue Cousins and just draft Mayfield.

It would save them more than $20 million annually, and would allow them to pursue other immediate needs this offseason in free agency.

There are some other talented players in this free agent class, namely tight ends like Trey Burton and Tyler Eifert, as well as some other offensive skill players. and linemen like Carolina’s Andrew Norwell.

The Broncos don’t have to put all of their eggs in the Kirk Cousins basket, and after getting the chance to spend the week with Mayfield, they may not.
