The Denver Broncos may be getting a golden opportunity, and will coach Baker Mayfield on the North roster of 2018 Senior Bowl…
The Denver Broncos got great news on Wednesday, as they learned they would be coaching the North roster of the 2018 Reese’s SeniorBowl in Mobile, Alabama. The news got even better when it was reported by Phil Savage that quarterback Baker Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy winner and potential Broncos first round target, will be on the North roster as well.
This is a huge opportunity for the Broncos, not only to get the chance to coach a roster at the Senior Bowl, but also to get the chance to work directly with Mayfield.
It remains to be seen who the Broncos will have additionally at the quarterback position, but they will have ample time over the course of the practices at the Senior Bowl to spend with the potential future face of the franchise.
Mayfield is fresh off of a very disappointing double-overtime loss against the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football playoff. He was the best player in college football this season and proved to NFL scouts that he’s more than just a ‘system’ player at the collegiate level.
Mayfield really turned some heads as a prospect this year, and is now considered a virtual lock for the top 10 picks.
The Broncos have the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but they may still have to trade up to acquire the Heisman winner. There are already rumors that quarterbacks could go in the first two picks of the draft, and if Mayfield falls past those two picks, it could be free-for-all to get up to the third pick and get Mayfield.
The Broncos certainly have the ammunition and the need to bring him in, but we’ll see if the rest of their offseason dictates that they go quarterback or another position with that top pick.
My guess is, there’s a good chance they will still be in the market for a quarterback at that point, even though John Elway recently said that it’s not ideal to have a rookie starting at that position.
What a day of news for the Denver Broncos.
